Community Involvement

During 2017, FortisOntario and its subsidiaries donated over $100,000 to charitable and local initiatives within the communities it serves.

FortisOntario and its employees donated more than $60,000 to the United Way and its charities. This included internal campaigns and sponsorship of the United Way golf tournament in Niagara.

For the 17th year in a row, Canadian Niagara Power sponsored Port Colborne’s annual Canal Days. This event draws more than 300,000 people over the four-day festival to the City of Port Colborne.

Canadian Niagara Power donated $50,000 to the Niagara District School Board towards the new state of the art Fort Erie Centre for Performing Arts.
On July 1, 2017 the new Wawa Goose Monument was officially unveiled to the public. Algoma Power committed to a multi-year donation totaling $40,000 to the project along with a matching campaign that totalled an additional $12,000.

Algoma Power was awarded the "Safe Work, Sound Business Award" sponsored by Sault Ste. Marie Safe Communities Partnership at the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Achievement Awards held on Saturday February 18, 2017. This award recognizes that Algoma Power uses a safe work management system, participates in workplace and / or community injury prevention programs and has low injury frequency and injury severity performance results.

In 2017, Cornwall Electric donated $5,000 to the City of Cornwall in support of their “Kid Zone’ as part of the city’s Canada 150th celebrations.
