Community Involvement
During 2010, FortisOntario and its subsidiaries donated over $130,000 to charitable and local initiatives within the communities it serves.
FortisOntario and its employees donated more than $60,000 to the United Way and its charities. This included internal campaigns and sponsorship of the United Way golf tournament in Niagara.
FortisOntario in conjunction with the Ontario Power Authority promoted energy efficiency in its service territories and made donations to a number of related community projects. In Fort Erie, $10,000 was donated to the Boys and Girls Club for energy efficient appliances. In Port Colborne, $6,500 was donated to the Reach Out Centre, a meal program and walk-in centre, and in Gananoque, $3,500 was donated to the local area food bank towards the purchase of an industrial sized, energy efficient refrigerator.
For the 10th year Canadian Niagara Power sponsored Port Colborne’s annual Canal Days. This event draws more than 300,000 people over the four-day festival to the City of Port Colborne.
In Cornwall, $40,000 was donated towards a score clock for the new Three Plus One main arena. This community centre boasts three NHL sized rinks and an indoor soccer field complex for the residents of Cornwall.
